The Indian government has dismissed as false a claim circulating on social media that public sector banks have been declared a public holiday every Saturday.
The Press Information Bureau (PIB) clarified that no such notification has been issued by the Department of Financial Services, Ministry of Finance.
PIB has appealed to the public to be cautious of such misleading information.
In fact, the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) had demanded that bank employees be given Saturday and Sunday off every week.
In addition to this demand, the UFBU had also announced a strike for several other demands. However, it was later postponed.
The Indian Banks' Association (IBA) had stated that a high-level committee would be formed to consider the demands.
