In February 2002, two accused in the bomb blast in Sabarmati Express train in Godhra, Gujarat, were sentenced to life imprisonment on Monday by the Special CBI Court of Ahmedabad.
According to the news agency PTI, when the prosecution succeeded in proving that 59 people died after burning two train bogies due to their conspiracy, the judge S K Vohra pleaded guilty to Farooq Bhana and Imran Sharu in this case.
However, the court acquitted Hussein Suleman Mohan, Kasam Bhameri and Farooq Dhantiya. Five were caught during the 2015-2016 and their trial was going on inside the Sabarmati Central Jail.
Suleman Mohan was arrested from Jhabua in Madhya Pradesh, Kasam Bhameri was arrested from Dahod railway station of Gujarat, Farooq Dhantiya and Farooq Bhana were arrested from their houses in Gujarat. While Imran Sheru was arrested from Malegaon, Maharashtra. Eight accused are still absconding.
Earlier, the court had convicted 31 people on March 1, 2011 in this case. After that the court sentenced 11 people to death and the other 20 sentenced to life imprisonment.
