The International Cricket Council (ICC) is contemplating to end the Champions Trophy. They are considering ending the Champions Trophy and getting two world T20 tournaments within four years.
The next edition of the Champions Trophy is to be held in India in 2021, but considering the increasing popularity of the game's small format (T-20), there is a doubt about the future of this tournament.
Cricinfo has written with ICC Chief Executive Officer David Richardson, "It is always difficult to differentiate between two tournaments of 50 overs. Now the World Cup is going to be 10 teams. In such a way, the Champions Trophy has almost become like the World Cup which I think is good."
He said, "I believe the World Cup is still a long tournament. The best four teams in the World Cup get a chance to play in the semi-finals. It does not have to be affected by rain-fed matches and one or two bad matches in the team as it is in the Champions Trophy."
He said, " By the way the Champions Trophy will or not in 2021 or there will be two World T20 tournaments instead, but there is ongoing discussion. Yes, but there is such a possibility. I can not say that this is going to happen because we saw that recently the Champions Trophy proved to be a good tournament, especially in Britain where you got to see the atmosphere in support of every team."
He said, so it is not hasty to finish it, but to be honest and clear, there is a discussion on bringing two World T20 tournaments during the four years. Richardson said, "In the four years, two World T20 tournaments will give us a chance to increase the game on a global scale. We can do this tournament of 16 or 20 teams."
