US President Donald Trump has said that he would like to meet Iranian President Hassan Ruhani at the right time.
The Foreign Minister of Iran suddenly arrived on Sunday at the G7 meeting in France. Then came Trump's statement.
Since the 2015 unilateral withdrawal of the US agreement to curb Iran's nuclear activities, there has been a lot of tension in the relationship between the two countries.
On Monday, however, Trump said he was hopeful of a new nuclear deal with Iran.
Trump, who was present at the G7 joint press conference with French leader Emmanuel Macron, said, "When I became president two and a half years ago, Iran is no longer what it was then."
He said, "I really believe that Iran can be a great nation ... but it cannot have nuclear weapons."
Earlier on Monday, Ruhani said that he is ready to meet anyone if he feels that Iran will get the benefit.
He said, "If I can be sure that meeting someone will help in the development of my country and solve people's problems, then I will not back down from doing so."
Trump's remarks came at the end of the G7 summit. Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Britain and the United States attended this meeting.
In this meeting, many issues were discussed including world trade, fire in the Amazon jungles and developments in Ukraine, Libya, Hong Kong.
In fact, after the break-up of the nuclear deal with Iran, the US imposed new sanctions on Iran.
Britain, France, Germany, Russia and China have also been involved in this agreement. These countries tried their best to save the nuclear deal.
On Sunday, Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Jawad Zarif said that apart from the meeting, his talks with the French Foreign Minister and French President Macron were very positive.
Macron played an active role in saving the deal. He said that he believed that a meeting between Trump and Ruhani had been made.
He said that nothing is certain yet and things are still in a delicate phase, but talks have started on some technical issues and progress is being made.
Macran said, "If they agree to meet with President Trump, I think an agreement can be reached."
In the 2015 agreement, Iran had to slow down its nuclear activities for 10 to 15 years and instead would have relaxed the sanctions.
The agreement included limiting uranium collection and allowing international investigations.
Apart from this, it was also said that Iran should build a heavy water reactor so that it could not produce weapons-plutonium.
In May last year, the US had announced its withdrawal from the agreement and imposed 12 conditions for the removal of the new nuclear agreement and sanctions.
It prohibited Iran from curbing the ballistic missile program and participating in regional conflicts.
Iran said that these conditions are not acceptable to them.
In a press conference on Monday, Trump said that for any new agreement, he would like nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles to be absolutely and not for long.
It is not clear whether Iran will accept these new terms. Iran's official press TV quoted a source as saying that Iran has rejected the condition to stop the missile program.
Meanwhile, Macron said that we need to make sure that Iran can never get nuclear weapons, but Iranians want economic compensation in some form instead.
