Nahid Islam, the leader of the anti-discrimination student movement in Bangladesh, has proposed the name of Nobel Prize-winning economist Professor Muhammad Yunus as the chief advisor of the interim government to be formed to run the country after the resignation of Sheikh Hasina.

Nahid Islam urged the President to form an interim government under the leadership of Professor Yunus as soon as possible.

Nahid Islam, one of the coordinators of the movement, proposed the name of the chief advisor in a video message on social media Facebook on the morning of Tuesday, August 6, 2024.

At that time, coordinators Asif Mahmud and Abu Bakr Majumdar were also present with him.

Nahid Islam also said that he had spoken to Professor Yunus about becoming the head of the interim government.

Nahid Islam said, "We have also spoken to Mohammad Yunus. He has agreed to take this important responsibility for Bangladesh on the appeal of the students.''

The Anti-Discrimination Student Movement also said that the names of other members of the Advisory Council would be announced soon.

Earlier, in a press conference on Monday, 5 August 2024, Nahid Islam had said, "We will not support any kind of government unless it is supported or proposed by student-citizens."

The Biden administration of the US has said that any interim government in Bangladesh should be formed in accordance with democratic principles, rule of law and the will of the Bangladeshi people.

The US State Department has said that it does not know whether Sheikh Hasina has sought asylum in their country or not.

US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller told reporters, "We want the people of Bangladesh to decide the future of the government there."

Matthew Miller said, "What is accountability? This should be seen in the law of Bangladesh. Those who commit violence and break the law should be held responsible."

Matthew Miller said that he does not know whether Sheikh Hasina has sought political asylum in the US or not.

Indian government's all-party meeting discusses the situation in Bangladesh

India's Modi government has discussed the Bangladesh crisis in an all-party meeting.

India's Foreign Minister S Jaishankar wrote on the social media platform X, "We discussed in the all-party meeting in Parliament what is currently happening in Bangladesh. We are happy that the current attitude of the government in the case of Bangladesh got full support of the MPs.''

Earlier on the night of Monday, 5 August 2024, India's PM Narendra Modi chaired a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS), in which he was briefed about the situation unfolding in Bangladesh.

India's Union Home Minister Amit Shah, India's Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, India's Foreign Minister S Jaishankar and India's Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman were present in this high-level meeting of the Cabinet Committee.
