US Embassy Condemns Murder of Journalist Gauri Lankesh

The US Embassy condemned the killing of senior Kannada journalist and social activist Gauri Lankesh on Wednesday.

In a statement, the US Embassy said, "American mission in India condemns killing of honorary journalist Gauri Lankesh in Bengaluru in collaboration with supporters of press freedom in India and around the world."

It says, "We express sympathy with Ms. Lankesh's family, friends and colleagues."

Three unknown assailants of Gauri Lankesh shot and killed when she returned home from her office. Lankesh was the editor of Popular Kannada Tabloid 'Lankesh Patrika'.

On Wednesday in protest against the murder of Lankesh, there were demonstrations throughout Karnataka. The protesters include journalists, activists, writers, thinkers and workers from women's organizations. People gathered here in Town Hall to hold a silent protest and they kept the planks.

On one plaque it was written, "You can kill a person, not his thoughts."

In the Victoria hospital premises, journalists protested silently, where they had postmotrums (Gauri Lankesh). In the areas of Mangluru, Kalburgi, Dharwad, Koppal, etc., across the state, citizens protested on the streets and protested.

In Mysore, journalists tied up the black lace on their shoulders against the killing and displayed in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office. Major protests were also held in New Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad and other cities of India.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah also canceled all his official programs on Wednesday. An official of the Chief Minister's Office said, "The chief minister has canceled all his programs including a one-day visit to Kerala in view of the incidents of Tuesday night."

Congress President Sonia Gandhi, expressing surprise and concern over the murder, said on Wednesday, "It can not be tolerated and it should not be tolerated."

Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi accusing BJP of silence on disagreeing saying that this is part of their (BJP) ideology. He said, "Who speaks against BJP, it is silenced ..."
