Tuticorin Violence: TNPCB ordered Sterlite Plant to immediately close, cutted the power

In India, the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) has ordered the closure of Vedanta unit Sterlite Copper Plant in Tuticorin with immediate effect. On Thursday morning the power supply of the plant disconnected. The orders for closure of the plant were issued by the President of TNPCB on Wednesday. Sources said the power supply to the plant was disconnected at 5.15 a.m on Thursday.

TNPCB said that during inspection conducted by its officers on May 18 and 19, it was found that the unit was conducting activities to resume its production operations.

Protests continued on Wednesday even after ten people were killed in police firing on Tuesday to close down the Sterlite copper plant in Tuticorin. A man was killed and many others were injured in police firing during a clash between demonstrators and the police on Wednesday.

The Tamil Nadu government has constituted a member commission headed by Retired Judge of Madras High Court Aruna Jagadishan to investigate Tuticorin violence. She will submit his report to the government. However, the deadline not to mention the report has been submitted.

After the second consecutive violence in Tuticorin, the Tamil Nadu government transferred the District Collector and Superintendent of Police. According to a government release, instead of Tuticorin district collector N Venkatesh, the district collector of Tirunavale Sandeep Nanduri has been installed. Due to police firing on the protesters, the district superintendent of police P Mahendran has been shifted to Chennai. Nilgiris district SP Murali Rambha has been given responsibility in his place. Venkatesh has been appointed as Additional State Project Officer.

The Madras High Court on Wednesday directed the state government to keep the dead body of the people killed in the police firing during the Sterlite protest on May 22 in Tuticorin till the next order. The vacation bench of Justice T. Ravindran and Justice P. Velamurugan directed the government to file an affidavit on the PIL filed by the attorney to the government till May 30. The petitioners again requested to give interim instructions to the authorities to set up a team of private doctors to conduct post mortem.

The Tamil Nadu government stopped Internet services in Tuticorin and its surrounding Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari districts on Wednesday to prevent rumors spreading through social media and restore peace. The government, in an order accusing the social media of spreading provocative messages, said that with such messages, a large crowd of around 20 thousand people gathered in front of Sterlite Copper Plant in Tuticorin on Tuesday. The result was later revealed as violence and police action. The government directed the nodal officers of Internet service providers to stop internet services from Wednesday to 27 May in these three districts.

On the second day in Tuticorin, due to the violence, Tamil Nadu Governor Banwari Lal Purohit on Wednesday canceled his stay in Nilgiris and returned to Chennai. Purohit, along with his family, went to the Ughagammandalam to participate in the Vedic Annual Flower Festival on May 21. There was a program to stay there till June 2.

The All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) strongly condemned the attempt to suppress protests against the Vedanta Sterlite project in Tamil Nadu on Wednesday. AITUC said in a statement that AITUC opposes the act of barbaric action taken against protesters protesting a factory that is spreading pollution there and invites people to unite to take this government out of power by adopting corporate friendly policies.

On Wednesday, Vedanta Limited asked the government to ensure the safety of its workers in Tuticorin Copper Factory in Tamil Nadu. At the same time, the company expressed sorrow at the incident of killing people in police firing during protests against this plant. Vedanta Limited said in the information sent to the Bombay Stock Exchange, that we are very sad on Tuesday's incident.

In protest against the Tuticorin violence, the student organizations and the groups of civil society protesting against the Tamil Nadu government on Wednesday outside the Tamil Nadu building. The protesters shouted slogans and demanded a dialogue with Tamil Nadu's chief local commissioner Jasbir Singh Bajaj. Though the security personnel kept barricades and protesters were prevented from entering the premises.
