The Supreme Court has sentenced six months in prison to Justice Karnan, the Calcutta High Court, who sentenced the five-year rigorous imprisonment to six other judges of the Supreme Court, including Chief Justice of India JS Khehar.
The Supreme Court has given this sentence in the court's contempt case. The Supreme Court has instructed to arrest them immediately. The DGP of Bengal will arrest him today. The court has barred the media from publishing orders given by them.
Earlier, Justice Karnan had sentenced the six other judges of the Supreme Court including CJI JS Khehar to five years of rigorous imprisonment. The judge had given this decision to all of them after being convicted under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
After summoning the CJI and 6 other judges, they did not appear before Justice Karnan, they issued non-bailable warrants and issued an order to appear again on May 8.
On Monday, when the Supreme Court Judge was not present, Justice Karnan convicted it as a contempt of court and pronounced a sentence of 5 years for all 7 judges.
The bench of the Supreme Court had rejected his petition to continue his judicial duties, saying that the High Court Judge is not as good at mental.
The apex court also issued a bailable warrant against Karnan on March 17. On 2 May, Justice Karnan issued the Suo Moto Order using Article 226 of the Constitution.
On May 1, the Supreme Court had ordered the constitution of the Medical Board to investigate the mental health of Justice Karnan. But Justice Karnan refused to do this. Responding to the court's decision, Justice Karnan had asked who is the supreme court to question his mental health?
