Senior Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Shivpal Yadav on Friday announced plans to form a new party, sparking talk of a possible split in the troubled SP. The party, to be called Samajwadi Secular Morcha, will be headed by former SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav, Shivpal told news agency ANI.
This development comes soon after his remarks on Wednesday that he would set up a new outfit unless the reins of the SP were handed back to Mulayam. Shivpal had also blamed SP president Akhilesh Yadav for the party's rout in the UP Assembly and Lok Sabha polls.
He also claimed that corrupt officials and people had joined hands with the Akhilesh regime in Uttar Pradesh, adding that this was happening under the current Yogi Adityanath government as well.
Shivpal said he will meet Adityanath and inform him about the situation.
The Samajwadi Party had witnessed a bitter feud between Shivpal and his nephew Akhilesh in the run-up to the Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls, in which it was drubbed by the BJP.
