All public and private sector banks are asking bank account holders to link their accounts to the Aadhaar.
Meanwhile, in response to the Right to Information (RTI), the Reserve Bank of India, which controls all the banks and the central bank of India, has denied any such order-directive.
In response to the RTI application filed by journalist Yogesh Sapkale, the Reserve Bank has said that no such order has been issued to the banks on behalf of him.
The Reserve Bank has made it clear that such a decision is of the Central Government.
Yogesh had asked the RBI to provide notices / instructions or circulars linking the bank accounts with the Aadhaar which the account holders are being asked to do this.
In response, the RBI has written, "On June 1, 2017, the Central Government published the Prevention of Money Laundering (Records Maintenance), in Second Amendment Rule 2017 Gazette, in GSR 538 (E) under which the Aadhaar (for those persons) Which is mandatory for creating a permanent number (PAN) and opening a bank account. It is worth mentioning in this regard that the RBI has not issued any guidelines related to it."
In the second question, the applicant sought the file notings from the RBI, in which the Aadhaar was asked to link the bank accounts.
In response, the RBI has made it clear that the Reserve Bank has not issued any directive to link the Aadhaar with bank accounts, hence the RBI is not in a position to provide a copy of such file notices.
In response to another question, the RBI has said that no such petition has been filed in the Supreme Court on behalf of him.
