The Election Commission is ready to buy such modern electronic voting machines which will stop working if they try to tamper with them. This step is being taken at a time when many political parties have been accused of molestation of EVMs in the recent assembly elections.
A Self Diagnostic System is installed to certify the precision of machines in the M-3 type EVM.
These machines will come with a mutual authentication system. Only a right EVM can communicate with other EVMs in the area. It should be manufactured by the PSU ECIL of nuclear power or the PSU BEL of defense sector. EVMs created by any other company will not be able to communicate with other machines. In this way the wrong machine will be in the bag.
The Ministry of Law, in response to the information provided by the Election Commission on behalf of the Parliament, said that the purchase of new machines will cost about Rs. 1940 crores (in addition to freight and tax). These machines can come in 2018, i.e. one year before the next Lok Sabha election.
The Election Commission has decided to replace 9,30,430 EVMs purchased before 2006, as the 15 years of old machines have been completed.
