In India, the Election Commission told the Delhi High Court on Tuesday that it does not register the political parties with their short name, but by the full name. Justice C. Harishankar fixed the date for the next hearing on February 22 next year.
The petition filed by lawyer Anupam Shrivasta has claimed that the name of the new party can create confusion among voters.
Indeed, against the registration of AAPKI APNI PARTY (People's) as a political party, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) lodged an objection, which was rejected by the Election Commission. Against this decision, the party led by Arvind Kejriwal has filed a petition in the Delhi High Court, on which the commission has given this argument in the court.
The Aam Aadmi Party has demanded to finish the registration of this new party on the basis that it will also have a short name 'AAP', which could lead to confusion among voters.
According to the news agency Bhasha, the Election Commission's counsel argued in the court that the registration of political parties by their full name, not by the abbreviation, hence there will be no confusion.
Before this, AAPKI APNI PARTY (People's) lawyer asked for time to file their reply. At the same time, the Aam Aadmi Party's lawyer also asked for the time to file an answer on the reply of the Election Commission.
The Election Commission gave a list of several parties in their affidavit whose brief names are same. Also, said that when the Aam Aadmi Party registered in 2013, another party was already registered with its abbreviation.
The Aam Aadmi Party has demanded the cancellation of the July 16 order of the Election Commission, through which its objection was against the registration of AAPKI APNI PARTY (People's).
