Polling for first phase of assembly elections in Gujarat in 89 constituencies concluded peacefully this evening. Over 65 per cent voter turnout was recorded in this phase till 5 PM. The voting percentage is expected to go up when the final figures are tallied. A total of 977 candidates are in the fray, including 57 women.
The first phase covered Saurashtra, Kutch and South Gujarat. Prominent candidates in this phase include Chief Minister Vijay Rupani and Congress leader Shaktisingh Gohil. Faulty EVMs were reported from several districts including Surat, Rajkot, Amreli, and Porbandar districts and these were promptly replaced.
Meanwhile, campaigning for the second phase of elections has picked up the pace. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi addressed several public meetings in various parts of the state today.
The second phase will be held on the 14th and counting will take place on the 18th of December.
