India's President Ram Nath Kovind, Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi today paid floral tributes at Dr Bhim Rao Ambedkar's statue at the Parliament House lawns in New Delhi on his 62nd death anniversary.
The architect of the Indian Constitution died on this day in 1956. The day is observed every year as Mahaparinirvan Diwas.
Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan, Deputy Speaker M Thambidurai, former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, former Deputy Prime Minister L. K. Advani, Home Minister Rajnath Singh and Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Thaawar Chand Gehlot and other dignitaries also offered tributes to Dr Ambedkar on the occasion.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, Dr Ambedkar gave the nation its social, economic and constitutional vision and in a way the fundamental values for running the society and the nation.
Rich tributes were paid to Dr Ambedkar by thousands of followers who converged at his memorial Chaityabhoomi in Mumbai.
The rain soaked ground at Chaityabhoomi after yesterday's rainfall - the highest December rain in Mumbai in 50 years - did not deter the followers of Ambedkar who gathered from various parts of the state and country. Those thronging the place shouted slogans like 'Jai Bheem' and 'Babasaheb amar rahe'. The city's public transport wing, BEST undertaking, ran special buses between Dadar and Shivaji Park. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has installed temporary sheds, mobile toilets and six medical stalls at Shivaji Park, Dadar station, Rajgriha (Ambedkar's residence) and Kurla terminus in view of the huge rush of the Dalit icon's followers. Drinking water arrangements were also made at Shivaji Park.
