In India, the Narendra Modi government is contemplating to give minority status to Vedic Brahmins. But the National Commission for Minorities has opposed any such move of the Center and said that any such step would be against the interests of existing minorities.

The Modi government had told the minority commission that they should consider this proposal and recommend the status of minorities to the Vedic Brahmins. But the minority commission is against any such move of the government.

In the 2016-17 report, the Minority Commission has said that Vedic Brahmins can not be given the status of minority because they are an integral part of Hindu religion. However, the commission has left the final decision on this to the Central Government.

The minority commission says that if the government gives the Vedic Brahmans the status of minority on the demand of the Brahman Mahasabha or the All India Brahman Mahasabha then similar demands can rise from Rajput, Vaishya and other Hindu castes too. Therefore, it is not right to give minority status to the Brahmins.

State that the Central Government has set up the National Minorities Commission under the National Minority Act 1992. 6 religious communities in India have minority status, including Muslim, Christian, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain and Parsi.

Over the last few days, many castes of the Hindu community are also demanding minority status on the basis of their mythological identity and identity. For the people of the minority community, the Central and State Governments undertake several plans and schemes and protect their religious and social identity.
