Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) MLA P.K. Kunhalikutty won on Mallapuram Lok Sabha seat from Kerala with 1,71,038 Lakhs votes on Monday.
In all stages of counting process IUML veteran stay ahead of its closest rival candidate of CPI(M) and youth leader MB Faizal. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate N. Sriprakash stayed in third place.
Before Kunhalikutty came out of the house, his supporters lifted him up while shouting in his support.
Kunhalikutty told the media that he is also moving forward in rural councils, where the Left Front is in power.
"The reason for this is that I stressed the need for a secular approach and the voters have trusted me," said Kunhalikutty. Together with the Congress led UDF's unity has helped in this.
This seat was voted on April 12, in which 71.33 percent of the turnout was voted.
The question arises now whether Kunhalikutty will be able to perform better than E. Ahmed who won this seat with a huge difference of 1.94 lakh votes in the 2014 elections.
Mallapuram seat was vacant with the death of IUML leader E. Ahamed, who was an MP from here. Mallapuram district is the stronghold of IUML and Ahmed won the seat in 2014 with a huge margin. But during the 2016 assembly elections the difference in the victory of the IUML legislators was reduced. However, the party had won all the seven assembly seats.
