In India, the make in India campaign is strongly shocked. The Akash air-to-air missile built in India is failing in one-third of basic tests.
The Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) in its report said that due to lack of missiles the country can go through a time of risk during the war. The CAG report has been handed over to the Parliament. The report said that the missile fell short on target. Apart from this there was less velocity than required and many important missile units were running poorly.
Air Force officials refused to comment on this. The Akash missile was built by Bangalore-based government agency Bharat Electronics, which cost about 3 thousand 6 hundred crore rupees.
The CAG report said that 3600 crore rupees were paid to the makers of the Akash, but the missile could not be installed on one of the six identified locations. It has also been said in the report that it has been seven years since contract.
The Akash and its new edition Akash Mk-2, the medium-range surface-to-air missile system has been developed to the targets of enemies in the range of 18 to 30 kms. Earlier, after the massive test of the Akash missile was first handed to the Indian Air Force in December 2008. It was seen as an indigenous system and enthusiastic was ordered to build six additional squadrons in 2010.
In these six extra squadrons, missile launchers, radars, related vehicles and hundred Akash missiles were to be deployed at six Air Force stations of Eastern Command. The government has also given permission for the development of basic infrastructure such as collection center, workshop and ramp structure.
The CAG report said that the development of all these also was to be done by India Electronics for the cost of around 100 crore, but it could not be completed by October 2016.
