During election duty in Jammu and Kashmir, Major Nitin Gogoi has been honoured who has been binding a Kashmiri in front of the army's jeep to making the 'human shield'.

Army Chief Bipin Rawat has given respect to Nitin Gogoi for sustained efforts for counter-insurgency operations. During the bye-election in the Birawah area of Srinagar Lok Sabha constituency on April 9, 53 National Rifles had tied a man named Farooq Ahmad Dar as a human shield before their Jeep to avoid the stone-bearers in Badgam.

Two days after its video was viral, a case was registered in Birawra police station. The army also ordered the court of inquiry of the whole case.

At the same time, however, Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi had justified the officer's action.

Major-led 5 vehicles included jawans, 12 election officials, 9 ITBP jawans and two policemen. Gogoi is from ACC background. Army Cadet College Wing trains Army, Navy and Air Force personnel as officers in the Indian Army. The officer has stayed on many ranks and he has a decade of experience in the army.
