Sri Lankan President Maitripala Sirisena has asked MPs to bring a no-confidence motion against the government again, as they have termed the no-confidence motion brought on Friday as unconstitutional.
According to a statement issued by the Presidential Office on Monday, Sirisena convened an all-party meeting on Sunday evening, in which many MPs were present. It said that he will take a decision on the no-confidence motion against the government only if it has been voted through name or through an electronic machine.
He said that this is the most acceptable method of voting at the local and international level. In the all-party meeting convened by Sirisena, the newly-elected Prime Minister Mahindra Rajapakse and the dismissed Prime Minister Ranil Vikramsinghe were also present.
Speaker of the Parliament Karu Jayasuriya had said on Friday that the non-confidence motion brought in the second time in Parliament against the government has been passed by majority. While presenting it, violence was resorted to in Parliament and a large number of policemen were also present. The government rejected this poll saying unconstitutional. The government had said that the Speaker did not even adopt the basic parliamentary procedure to present the motion of no confidence.
Political crisis has come in Sri Lanka since October 26. On that day President Sirisena surprisingly dissolved the Cabinet and removed Vikramasinghe from the Prime Minister and appointed former President Mahinda Rajapakse as the new Prime Minister. In addition, he also formed a new caretaker government.
