Large scale looting in Bangladesh's capital Dhaka after Sheikh Hasina's resignation and escape from the country

According to the BBC Bangla correspondent in Dhaka, protesters have also vandalized the residence of the Home Minister of Bangladesh and large scale looting is taking place in the city.

Earlier, the country's army chief had appealed to the people to maintain peace.

Sheikh Hasina has fled from the country after resigning from the post of Prime Minister of Bangladesh. She is reported to be leaving for India.

Students in Bangladesh have been protesting against reservation for special people in big government jobs in the country since July 2024. This demonstration led to large scale violence in which about 300 people have died.

In the current environment in Dhaka, protesters have also vandalized the residence of the Home Minister in Dhanmondi area.

According to the BBC Bangla service, smoke is seen coming out of the residence of the Home Minister.

After Sheikh Hasina resigned, the protesters entered the Prime Minister's Office.

Earlier, several footages surfaced in which it was seen that the protesters were taking away furniture from Sheikh Hasina's office in Dhaka.

A protester has told the BBC that the statue of Sheikh Hasina's father Mujibur Rahman has also been damaged by the protesters.

Mujibur Rahman, who played a major role in the independence of Bangladesh, was the President of the country till 1975. During that time, he was assassinated by the army.

The protesters have also set fire to a museum built in memory of Mujibur Rahman.

Apart from this, there are reports of arson in the office of Deputy Commissioner and SP in the eastern city of Sylhet, Bangladesh. There are reports of fire being set in the houses of some councilors there.

A spokesperson for British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has said that immediate steps are needed to ensure the safety of democracy in Bangladesh.

The official spokesperson of the British Prime Minister's Office has said in a conversation with reporters in London that "The Prime Minister is very saddened by the violence we have seen in Bangladesh in recent days."

He said, "I hope that immediate steps are taken to ensure democracy in Bangladesh, so that the safety of the people of Bangladesh and peace can be restored in the country."

After the student movement in Bangladesh turned violent, Sheikh Hasina had to leave the post of PM. She has also left Bangladesh.

The Chief of the Bangladesh Army has said that an interim government will be formed in the country.
