Nearly four months after the death of Palestinian-American journalist Shirin Abu Akleh, Israel has admitted in its report that one of its soldiers mistakenly killed al-Jazeera journalist Shirin Abu Akleh.
Akleh was shot in May 2022 when she had gone to cover a raid in the West Bank.
However, top army legal officials have also ruled out launching a criminal investigation against the soldiers involved in the attack.
Abu Akleh's family said they were not "surprised" as the Israeli military was constantly trying to hide the truth and avoid taking responsibility for the killing.
Abu Akleh went to cover Israel's raid on Jinin in the West Bank on May 11, 2022. During this, firing started between Israeli soldiers and Palestinian extremists. At the time of the attack, Abu Akleh was wearing a jacket with 'PRESS' written in large letters.
Different sides were coming out on the cause of Abu Akleh's death.
Witnesses and Palestinian officials said Akleh was shot by Israeli soldiers. The claim was later supported by the United Nations and various press investigative agencies. The US review found that Akleh was probably shot by Israeli soldiers.
Now Israel's Security Forces (IDF) have said that they have completed the ongoing internal investigation.
A senior IDF official said it was highly suspected that Akleh was accidentally shot by an IDF soldier and that the soldier, of course, did not understand that Akleh was a journalist.
The officer also said that investigators spoke to the attacking soldier. "The soldier told what he actually did, and if he did, it was a mistake," he said.
