Iraq has announced the victory of Islamic State in Mosul. Iraqi Prime Minister Haidar al-Abdi announced the victory in the freed Mosul on Sunday (July 9, 2017). This is a serious defeat for the terrorist organization Islamic State. His office said in a statement that Abdi reached the freed Mosul and greeted the soldiers and Iraqi people on the achievement of this important victory.
Three years ago the jihadists had captured Mosul, after which the victory was announced on the terrorists after a fierce battle lasting nine months. Iraqi soldiers have started celebrating while passing through Mosul's deserted streets. After nine months of conflict, Iraq has won.
An Iraqi commander had asked the surviving IS fighters to surrender to loudspeakers, but his commander turned it down. The fight is not yet completely over. While issuing a statement by the Prime Minister's Office, the noise of the guns and air strikes in the city was also heard. The announcement of the victory in Mosul is a milestone for Iraqi security forces, who have been trying to wipe out IS terror in Iraq since 2014.
An Iraqi observer told 'The Independent', "It may take two or three days, but the Iraqi government says it is right that the biggest battle of its war against IS has been won."
A day earlier the IS had a big counter attack. The Joint Operations Command has said, "Our army is still moving forward ... before reaching the river, our army does not have much to do."
Iraqi officials had made similar announcements last week that the security forces had restricted the small area of the old city of Mosul near the river Dajla.
Although the army's campaign has slowed down in the last few days Control of IS is now limited to one square kilometer area. But IS is using citizens as a shield, due to this reason air strikes are not possible.
The federal police announced on Saturday that they have completed the assigned work, although the army and special forces on regular basis continue to face the terrorists.
