India's tripartite agreement with ULFA, announcement of removal of AFSPA from 85 percent of Assam

On Friday, 29 December 2023, a tripartite agreement has been signed between the Government of India, the Government of Assam and ULFA (United Liberation Front of Assam).

On this occasion, ULFA representatives, Union Home Minister of India Amit Shah and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma were also present.

India's Union Home Minister Amit Shah has termed this agreement as historic and said that it is very important for peace in Assam and the North-Eastern states.

Amit Shah also informed that AFSPA (Armed Forces Special Powers Act) is being removed from 85 percent of Assam.

Amit Shah said, "For a long time, Assam and the entire Northeast have suffered violence. Under the guidance of the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, the Home Ministry has been running with the vision of a Northeast India free from extremism, violence and conflict. The Government of India, the Government of Assam and Due to the agreement reached between ULFA, we have been successful in ending all the armed groups of Assam here.''

Amit Shah said, "At least 10,000 people were killed in ULFA's long-term struggle and those who died on both sides from 1979 till now, died for this country. Today this problem is being completely resolved, I am happy about it.''

"After talking to ULFA representatives, a big package has been approved by the Government of India along with a lot of projects for the development of Assam."

Amit Shah said, "We assure you that each and every item of the agreement will be implemented in a time bound manner and the Narendra Modi government will live up to your trust."

Amit Shah said that in the last five years, 9 peace and border related agreements have been signed in different states of the North-East. On record 9 thousand cadres have surrendered.
