In Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh, a total of 29 people, including 26 students, were killed due to school bus falling in a ditch on Monday. Superintendent of Police Santosh Patial has confirmed deaths.
All dead children are under 10 years of age. Apart from this, the bus driver and two teachers were also killed in the accident. India Prime Minister Narendra Modi has condoled the tragedy.
Police said that the number of dead can increase due to children being stranded in the stools of the bus. The rescue work continues. According to eyewitnesses, local villagers started rescue work before reaching the official rescue team.
About 45 students of Wazir Ram Singh Pathania Memorial Public School were returning home from school. At that time, their uncontrolled bus fell into a ditch near Gurchal village on Noorpur-Chamba road.
The team of local administration and national disaster response force are doing rescue operations. The team had to face a lot of trouble to remove the dead bodies and the injured, trapped in the accident. Some of the injured have been dispatched to Pathankot in Punjab for treatment.
Chief Minister Jayaram Thakur has expressed grief at the incident. Thakur has announced compensation of Rs 5 lakh each to the family of each person killed in the accident. The orders for investigation of this accident have been given.
