Congress candidate Sunil Jakhar has won the Gurdaspur Lok Sabha by-election.
Jakhar defeated BJP candidate Sarna Singh Salaria by a margin of 1,93,219 votes.
Congress leaders and activists started celebrating victory in Gurdaspur, Chandigarh and other places by breaking crackers and sharing sweets.
The BJP won the 2014 Lok Sabha elections on this seat.
This seat was vacant after Vinod Khanna, who was a four-time MP on this seat, died in April. This seat was voted on October 11. Nearly 56 percent of the 15.22 lakh registered voters used of right to their vote in this election, although there was less frequent voting than the 70 percent polling in the 2014 general elections.
In a conversation with the reporters, the state Cabinet Minister Navjot Singh Sindhu said, "We have gifted the gift of Diwali by packing party Vice President Rahul Gandhi in a red ribbon, as it will set the road forward. .... ''
Sidhu said, "It is a big slip on the face of 'Jija-Sale' (SAD chief Sukhbir Badal and Vikram Singh Majithia). Today BJP will understand that the Akali Dal has become a big burden in Punjab. Frequently people have reminded them. .....''
