In the clashes with the supporters of Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) in the hills of North West Bengal, 36 policemen have been seriously injured, of which 20 policemen have been admitted to the hospital.
ADG Anuj Sharma said that the supporters of GJM had attacked the police and the jawans with glass bottles and stones, in response to which the police had to leave tear gas shells.
The Gorkha Janmukti Morcha is on an indefinite shutdown for 6 days from the demand for separate state. They said that the injunction is applicable in the entire area and no permission has been given to procession. GJM supporters violated the orders and took out the procession. When the police stopped them, protesters threw stones and bottles on them. Police left tear gas shells and lathi-charged to disperse the crowd.
Meanwhile, GJM claimed that two of his supporters died in police firing and five seriously injured. GJM's assistant general secretary Binay Tamang said, "Two people have died and five have been seriously injured. We are looking for our people."
Police have denied the firing on demonstrators. ADG (law and order) Anuj Sharma said, "Police did not firing. GJM has set fire to our vehicles. We are investigating the incident."
GJM is the sixth day of the shutdown in the hills of North Bengal, on Saturday, when fresh incidents of violence and demonstrations in the area have taken place. Earlier, GJM's Tamang claimed that the police had raided and ransacked their house.
On the other hand, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee condemned the demolition by the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) and termed the violence in the northern hills of the state as a deep conspiracy.
The Chief Minister said, "It is a deep conspiracy. So many weapons and fighting items can not come in one day alone. There is an international and state border. They are violating the Constitution. They are only throwing bombs. They are collecting arms and bombs illegally. "
Banerjee alleged that GJM is relation with terrorist groups in the North-Eastern states. She said, "I have been told that they are relation with the underground militants of the North-East India. I have requested that they should not do any kind of help in Darjeeling."
