France: Investigation begins against far-right National Rally leader Marine Le Pen
Tuesday, July 9, 2024
An investigation has begun in France against the 2022 presidential election campaign of Marine Le Pen, leader of the far-right National Rally party.
Prosecutors in Paris said they would investigate allegations of embezzlement, fraud and forgery. The investigation process began a week ago.
In fact, the investigation began after the report of the National Commission on Campaign Accounts and Political Financing in 2023.
This commission investigates the expenses and funding of candidates. However, no official reason has been given yet as to why the investigation has started nor has Marine Le Pen given any response.
In the French elections, the National Rally got the most votes in the first round. But in the second round, it lagged behind and came in third place.
There, the New Popular Front, a coalition of left-wing parties, got the most votes while French President Emmanuel Macron's party came second.
