Earthquake tremors in Iran-Iraq, More than 400 deaths, many injured

A strong earthquake of 7.3 on the hill border of Iran-Iraq has come. More than 400 people were killed in the earthquake, while 6700 people were injured. Rescue work is being interrupted due to landslide.

Behnam Saidi, deputy chief of the disaster unit of the Iranian government set up to handle the earthquake situation, told first on the official television that more than 400 people were killed and 6700 others were injured.

There are also reports of the death of six others in the Iraq border.

Moztaba Nikkeradar, deputy governor of the Karman Shah province of Iran, said, "We are preparing to set up three emergency relief camps. The USGS reported that the earthquake came at around 9.20 pm last night at South-West 30 kilometers away from Halbaza.

In view of the earthquake, officials have announced the closure of schools in Iran's Karman Shah and Illam provinces. More than 20 villages of Iran have been destroyed in the earthquake. Electricity and water supply is interrupted. Iran's Emergency Department teams are helping through helicopters fulfill the basic needs of people in earthquake affected areas.

The area near Iran-Iraq border is considered to be sensitive. In 2003, 6.6 magnitude earthquake struck the historic city of Bam, and more than 26 thousand people were killed.
