Bangladesh: Mob attack on police stations, many stations have no policemen

Several police stations including Jatrabari, Badda, Mohammadpur, Adabar in Bangladesh's capital Dhaka were attacked and looted overnight.

On Monday, 5 August 2024, several police stations were attacked, and at many places the angry mob also clashed with the police. Policemen fled from some police stations.

On the morning of Tuesday, 6 August 2024, when the BBC Bangla correspondent visited Mohammadpur police station, the entire station had turned into a pile of rubble.

Smoke can be seen rising from some rooms of the police station. Several burnt cars and furniture can be seen in the police station premises.

All kinds of items including fans, chairs, tables were looted from inside the police station. Due to the security crisis, on Sunday, 4 August 2024, the policemen on duty at the police station left the station and went to a safe place.

An SI of Mohammadpur police station said on the condition of anonymity- "All the weapons and ammunition inside the police station have been looted."

The nearby Adabar police station was also looted.

It is said that on the night of Sunday, August 4, 2024, vehicles parked in front of the police station, motorcycles and goods kept inside the police station were looted.

No policeman was seen in this police station as well. On Monday, August 5, 2024, Badda and Bhatara police stations were also attacked. The police station building was burnt to ashes due to the fire.

Government vehicles parked outside the police station and all the goods kept inside were burnt. Apart from this, a siren was heard ringing in the police line in Rajarbagh in a video going viral on social media.

According to local media reports, most of the 50 police stations in Dhaka do not have police.

On Monday, 5 August 2024, protesters in Bangladesh vandalised and set fire to the 'Bangabandhu Smriti Jadughar' located in Dhanmondi.

This museum was built in Rajshahi district of Bangladesh to preserve the legacy of Sheikh Hasina's party Awami League.

The protesters also burnt the picture of Sheikh Hasina's father Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman kept in this museum.

Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, general secretary of the main opposition party Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) in Bangladesh, has said that if the interim government is not formed by 2 pm on Tuesday, 6 August 2024, then a political vacuum may arise in the country.

In a briefing in Dhaka on Tuesday, 6 August 2024, the BNP said that no name has been proposed to the President for the interim government. The BNP will send the name when asked by the President.

The BNP said this in relation to the proposal of the name of Nobel Prize-winning economist Muhammad Yunus on behalf of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.

The BNP has said that it has full faith in the students. But all-party matters should be given importance.

Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir also urged to hand over power by holding elections within three months. Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said that BNP Acting President Tariq Rahman has been requested by the party to return to the country soon.

Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said, "Those who are attacking and looting institutions out of revenge should stop it. They are not people of the movement, but are against the movement.''

India's Foreign Minister S Jaishankar has given a statement on targeting the businesses and temples of minorities in Bangladesh.

S Jaishankar was speaking in the Rajya Sabha on the current situation in Bangladesh.

S Jaishankar has said that the biggest concern in Bangladesh is that the businesses and temples of the minority community have been targeted there.

"We are keeping an eye on the minorities in Bangladesh. Extra vigilance is being maintained on the border in India.''

He has told the House that about 19 lakh Indians are living in different areas of Bangladesh. However, about 10 lakh people have come to India in July 2024 itself and most of the Indian students are left there at present.

"On August 5, 2024, Sheikh Hasina decided to resign. She sought permission to bring the flight to India in a very short time. She reached Delhi yesterday (5 August 2024) evening.''

S Jaishankar has said that the series of protests started in Bangladesh after the general elections held in January 2024.

Bangladesh President Mohammad Shahabuddin has issued an order dissolving the country's Parliament.

This information was given in a notice sent by the press wing of the President's Office on Tuesday, 6 August 2024.

It has been told in this notice that after a meeting of the chiefs of the three armies, leaders of various political parties, representatives of civil society and leaders of the student movement with President Mohammad Shahabuddin, it has been decided to dissolve the National Parliament.

Notification in this regard will be issued on Tuesday, 6 August 2024.

This Parliament was formed after the elections on 7 January 2024.

On Monday, 5 August 2024, the President issued an order releasing many opposition leaders including BNP leader Khaleda Zia from house arrest.
