Artemis 2 sets new record, astronauts travel 406,771 kilometers

Tuesday, April 7, 2026

Four astronauts on NASA's Artemis 2 mission have reached a place in space farthest from Earth, where no human has ever traveled before.

The Orion spacecraft has traveled its farthest distance from Earth. This is a new record for the furthest distance a human has traveled from the planet.

NASA reported that this distance was 252,756 miles (406,771 kilometers). The previous record for the farthest distance from Earth was set by Apollo 13 in 1970.

It is noteworthy that NASA's first mission to the Moon took off in more than fifty years. The Artemis 2 mission rocket took off from the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida.

This mission launched on April 1, 2026. In this 10-day mission, astronauts will not land on the moon's surface, but will keep roaming around it.
