About 123 high educational institutions in India have to remove 'University' from their name. In fact, those higher educational institute who are proposed to be created as a university, they will have to remove 'University' from their name.
The University Grants Commission (UGC) has issued a circular on November 10 which has instructed that such educational institutions should remove the university from its name within a month. Instead, these educational institutions can use 'Deemed to be University'.
The order of the Supreme Court which was received on November 3 in this circular has also been attached.
According to the circular, the educational institutions who will not follow this directive will be prosecuted under the UGC (Institutions Deemed to be Universities) Regulations, 2016.
This instruction has been sent to many other educational institutions including Indian Institute of Agricultural Research (PUSA), Delhi, Indian Institute of Foreign Trade, Institute of Lever and Billiree Science, Jamia Hamdard, National Dairy Research Institute, Karnal, Forest Research Institute, Dehradun, BIT Mesra, Ranchi, Christ University, Bengaluru, Symbiosis University, Pune, BITS Pilani.
